Padua/Amsterdam, 19 February 2024. Banca Etica hosts in Padua and Milan the 16th Annual Meeting of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), a network of the most socially and environmentally responsible banks in the world. From 26-29 February, the conference ‘The World at a Crossroads: Values in Finance and Technology to Transform Society’ will include 200 CEOs and senior executives from values-based banks in 35+ countries. They will explore how banks can lead the way to a fairer, greener and more inclusive future.

The GABV is made up of over 70 pioneering banks, credit unions and microfinance institutions from across the world. Its mission is to put finance at the service of people and the planet, and advocates for banks to take a leading role in shaping a sustainable economy.

The host for this year’s summit in Padua and Milan is Banca Etica, a pioneer of ethical banking and responsible investment in Italy, a role model across Europe and a co-founder of the GABV. Established in 1999 by leading Italian civil society organisations, Banca Etica celebrates its 25th Anniversary as the first and only Italian ethical bank.

Anna Fasano, President of Banca Etica:In the year of its 25th anniversary, Banca Etica is proud to host the annual meeting of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, a continuously growing network of financial institutions operating throughout the world which, each with its own peculiarities, are united by a radical vision of ethics and sustainability in finance.”

“Values-based banks from all over the world will meet in Italy, aware indeed of an international horizon in which the dramatic weight of old and new armed conflicts coexists with a forward momentum founded on extraordinary technologies that must be carefully governed; and they will meet to consolidate a common vision on challenges and objectives, to strengthen alliances, share proven solutions and develop new ones, together”.

The World at a Crossroads

The GABV Annual Meeting marks the key moment for the Banking on Values movement. This year’s programme explores how values-based banking can harness the power of technology to transform customers and the economy.

“The 2024 Annual Meeting of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values in Italy marks a crucial moment for our movement. In a world grappling with complex challenges, values-based banking can support the transformation that cannot be delayed any longer,’ explains Martin Rohner, Executive Director, GABV.

“Progressive banks can help address social and environmental issues, helping customers adapt to a changing climate and building a fairer, more inclusive economy. During our meeting, we will work together to accelerate the positive change we need.  We will explore the potential and risks of technology, when it’s informed by values, to deliver rapid benefits. As an international community, we will foster solidarity, peace and mutual support,” he continues.

Public events on Social Economy and Peace

The programme includes two public events that will be streamed via YouTube:

  • The World at a Crossroads: Monday 26 February, from 16:30 to 18:30h at the Aula Magna of Padua University, with keynotes from Professor Stefano Quintarelli, serial entrepreneur, member of the UN’s Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and member of the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence; and Gaël Giraud, Founder of the Environmental Justice Program at Georgetown University, Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).
