The movement keeps growing bigger and bigger

30 January 2019

We are delighted to welcome two new members and three new supporting partners to our network. The first new full member is Sanasa Development Bank, Sri Lanka and its CEO, Thilak Piyadigama. They are the first bank in Sri Lanka to join the GABV and are a fast-growing MSME bank with 94 branches across the country. We also welcome a new associate member bank: Grooming Microfinance Bank, Nigeria and its CEO, Godwin Nwabunka. They are a microfinance bank providing inclusive financial services. Lastly, we are pleased to introduce three new supporting partners:

  • CDC, development bank of the UK, who supports the building of businesses throughout Africa and South Asia, to create jobs, and to make a lasting difference to people’s lives in some of the world’s poorest places.
  • Promujer, has become one of Latin America’s leading women’s development organizations. Their integrated approach offers access to finance, health and educational services.
  • Sidi, International Solidarity for Development and Investment strives to contribute to the building of a more inclusive economy, which would give poor populations from Southern and Western countries a chance.

The total number of banks in the GABV network as of the end September 2019, is 56 full member banks, two associate banks and 16 supporting partners.  The continued growth and strength of our network is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our members, driven by the principles of values-based banking.

Lots of other exciting events took place during the last quarter. It was climate week in New York, where a major milestone took place—the UN Principles for Responsible Banking were signed at UN HQ in New York in front of the Secretary General Guterres. We were very proud that Triodos Bank and Amalgamated Bank participated as some of the frontrunners in helping to change finance, along with 130 founding signatories. The launch of the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) also took place during that week.

We are now busy preparing for the GABV Annual Meeting 2020 in Bern. The theme this year is: Every Degree Matters – Mobilising Finance for People and Planet. The event takes place from 24-27 February 2020 and is hosted by Alternative Bank Switzerland (ABS). As part of the annual meeting, a conference will also take place on 26 February co-hosted by Alternative Bank Switzerland (ABS) and WWF Switzerland.

There is plenty to look forward to in the new few months, such as the final module of the Leadership Academy in Boston. We are also happy to announce that the registration for the next year’s Leadership Academy has been opened. You will find more information here.

As we head to the end of year, it is always satisfying to see how much work is being done by GABV members to focus on people, planet and prosperity. We will keep you up to date with the latest news.

Let’s continue banking for a better world
