In June 2024, BancoSol reached a significant milestone in advancing gender equality and financial inclusion by launching Bolivia’s first-ever gender bond, “Bonos Sociales Avanza Mujer BancoSol 1.” This innovative initiative raised USD 30 million, dedicated to supporting women-led micro and small enterprises (MSEs) across Bolivia, with the goal of financing at least 4,500 businesses.

Advancing Sustainable Development Goals

The issuance of this gender bond aligns with global efforts to advance gender equality, a key component of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, the bond contributes to SDG 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, as well as SDG 1, focused on eradicating poverty, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Supported by the Danish SDG Investment Fund, the bond reflects BancoSol’s commitment to social development and financial inclusion. This initiative exemplifies the growing trend in the financial sector towards impact investing, where investments are made with the intention of generating positive social and environmental impact alongside financial returns.

A legacy of transformative microfinance

BancoSol’s gender bond serves not only as a financial instrument but also as a catalyst for social change. By channelling resources to women entrepreneurs, BancoSol is helping to dismantle barriers that have traditionally restricted women’s economic participation. This initiative is expected to have a far-reaching impact, benefiting not only the women involved but also their communities and the wider Bolivian economy.

As the first of its kind in Bolivia, this gender bond sets a precedent for other financial institutions in the region. It demonstrates the potential of financial markets to drive social progress and underscores the importance of integrating gender considerations into investment strategies.

In summary, BancoSol’s issuance of the gender bond is a significant milestone in Bolivia’s financial sector and a crucial step towards empowering women entrepreneurs. It highlights the role of innovative financial instruments in achieving sustainable development and promoting gender equality, offering a model for other institutions to replicate in pursuit of these global goals.
