The First MicroFinance Bank-Afghanistan (FMFB-A) is committed to more than just financial services – it is dedicated to making a positive impact on communities and the environment. As part of this commitment, FMFB-A has embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainability, with solar energy at the forefront of its efforts.

The First MicroFinance Bank-Afghanistan (FMFB-A) is leading the way towards a greener future in the region by embracing the power of solar energy. In its pursuit of a greener future, FMFB-A has achieved significant milestones:

Herat Branch Solarisation

FMFB-A embarked on a significant journey in March 2023 when its Herat branch became the first facility to be powered by solar energy. The installation of solar panels with a capacity of 40KW provided a reliable source of electricity, leading to substantial cost savings. By reducing its reliance on traditional fuel sources and lowering maintenance expenses, FMFB-A not only improved its financial performance but also made a meaningful contribution to environmental sustainability. The transition to solar energy resulted in an estimated reduction of 23 metric tons of CO2 emissions compared to the previous year.

Kisham Branch Joins the Solar Revolution

Building on the success of the Herat branch, FMFB-A expanded its solar initiative to the Kisham branch in April 2024. With a capacity of 20KW, the solar panels installed at the Kisham branch represent another step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. By harnessing the power of the sun, FMFB-A has reduced operational costs and carbon emissions, further solidifying its commitment to environmental stewardship. The Kisham Branch is now contributing to a healthier planet, with 11 CO2 (Metric Ton) saved compared to the previous year.

FMFB-A’s Commitment to a Greener Future

FMFB-A’s journey towards sustainability doesn’t end with the Herat and Kisham branches. As a proud member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), FMFB-A is committed to leading by example and inspiring positive change. Over the next five years, FMFB-A plans to install solar panels in 9-10 additional branches, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint by an estimated 145 CO2 (Metric Ton). By embracing solar energy and other sustainable practices, FMFB-A is transforming its organisation and contributing to a brighter, more sustainable future for Afghanistan and beyond.

At FMFB-A, sustainability isn’t just a goal – it’s a journey to which the bank is wholeheartedly committed. Through its transition to solar energy and other eco-friendly initiatives, FMFB-A is paving the way for a greener, more prosperous future.
