Tamara Vrooman recognized with province’s highest honour, The Order of British Columbia

Vancity President and CEO Tamara Vrooman is receiving the province’s highest honour, The Order of British Columbia. The Order of BC recognizes those British Columbians whose achievements have contributed to a better quality of life in B.C. and beyond. Tamara is among 15 exceptional people selected from 209 nominations this year.

Tamara was recognized for being a pioneer in values-based business and for leading with excellence throughout her career, both during her time as B.C.’s Deputy Minister of Finance, as well as in her current role at Vancity.

She is a sought-after advisor with organizations, leaders and governments at all levels—regional, provincial, national and international—whether on business matters, social change initiatives, or environmental sustainability, and often at the intersection of all three. Her innovative and integrated thinking has benefitted the people and communities of B.C., whether it relates to individuals or the complex systems of which they are a part.

Under Tamara’s leadership, Vancity has become internationally recognized for our values-based banking model. Tamara’s work has focused on including society’s marginalized citizens in the banking system, tackling gender equity in pursuit of fairness, ensuring people with disabilities have access to employment markets, supporting integration of immigrant and refugee communities, and moving forward reconciliation with Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

“These exceptional recipients are pillars of our communities, who have demonstrated excellence and distinction in their fields,” said Lt. Gov. Janet Austin, chancellor of the order. “I wish to extend my thanks to all new members for their commitment to meaningful work that leaves a lasting legacy, which benefits and elevates our province for future generations.”

Tamara will attend The Order of BC Investiture ceremony in Victoria on June 28, which will be viewable by webcast here. This also marks the 30th anniversary of this distinction. Read more about the 2019 Order of BC recipients here.
