PROFILE

 

You will proactively engage with members, Associate Banks and Supporting Partners to help them exchange knowledge and requirements focused on research to support the business case for values based banking and metrics to support assessment and communication of business results. The RSC will source internally from members and externally from relevant entities opportunities for expanding both research and metrics activities of the GABV. To this end, you will engage constantly with others within the GABV Secretariat, especially Chapter Representatives, Communications and Marketing, and the Executive Director whilst working with direction and support from the Senior Economist. You will also work on developing the plan for the eventual replacement of the retiring Senior Economist within a 2-year time-frame.

 

TASKS

  • Support building strategic partnerships with external stakeholders focused on changing the banking paradigm to support social impact delivery as well as financial results with a focus on research and metrics related content
  • Managing a broad spectrum of projects supporting development and implementation of the Scorecard, a proprietary GABV assessment tool to measure any bank’s business model for compliance with the Principles of Values Based Banking with specific activities in:
    • Developing a long term strategic plan for use of the Scorecard, most likely extending beyond GABV members
    • Managing the ongoing development of the Scorecard in coordination with the GABV Metrics Network and external stakeholders
    • Recommending and implementing an operational platform to gather Scorecards from a growing number of banks
    • Developing and implementing communications for the Scorecard overall and for specific banks using the Scorecard including websites, social media and general presentations
  • Managing and supporting expanded research internally and externally to further build the business case for Values Based Banking
  • Developing in conjunction with the Executive Director and the Senior Economist a transition plan for replacing the retiring Senior Economist

 

Key requirements for success include an entrepreneurial approach to delivering results with incredible flexibility, proactivity and tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty in a complex and changing environment.

 

Candidates must have a strong capability for internal and external networking and an appetite to develop excellent and close relationships in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual setting.

 

He / she will report to the Senior Economist but with a very strong connection to the Executive Director.

 

As the Senior Economist is not full time in the office and the Executive Director is based abroad with frequent travel, candidates must be open to be guided at a distance with periodical in person or video conference interactions. However, full support will be provided by the Senior Economist, with extensive experience in banking as well as the development of the GABV with a focus on the Scorecard and research.

 

Your profile

 

  • Have a minimum of 5 – 10 years experience with an impact metrics or finance background
  • You are a planner and strategic thinker
  • You have a keen eye for detail especially in analysis, writing, editing, and developing content and publications
  • You are creative with small budgets and high workloads to create effective solutions in a fast paced environment
  • You have high energy, a positive attitude and the drive to continuously add value
  • Excellent oral and written, preferably native, knowledge of English is a must with a strong preference for someone with fluency in Spanish
  • Prior experiences and proven track record in fields similar to the activities to be performed in this role are required
  • Previous experience in small to mid sized network/NGO organizations, multicultural settings or banking would be an asset
  • Ideally advanced degree or MsC in business, economics or development
  • Potential for replacing the Senior Economist

 

The candidate must be someone not “looking for a job” but looking with passion for a challenge during the next (minimum) two to (maximum) four years that will foster their professional careers into a next step. They are seeking to be a co-entrepreneur rather than merely co-worker.

Note: Applicants must be based in Europe with a very strong preference for a Netherlands location. They must be nationals of a European member state or have a valid working permit for the European Union.

They must be willing to work hard in a growing and uncertain environment within a movement of banks that want to change the worldwide banking paradigm. At the GABV things are not stable and will not be stable in the coming years since the GABV Secretariat and the member banks are continuously writing new pages in the history of the movement. This means that the Research and Scorecard Coordinator will be a protagonist in the development of what the GABV is going to look like in the future. This is an exciting challenge and a great career opportunity. They will not be just working for the GABV but will be co-shaping the GABV of the future.

 

Ideally we are looking for someone seeking to work the equivalent of three or four days per week with a flexible approach. The budget the GABV has to finance the job is between € 3.400,- and € 3700,- per month based on 32 hours including social security and other related costs if any. The GABV does not provide a pension scheme. Salaries will be revised and improved every year according to performance. Potential for assuming a more senior role in the course of 2019 upon the retirement of the Senior Economist is a plus.

The GABV is looking for a Metrics Intern for a minimum of 4 months and a maximum of 6 months for 32 to 40 hours/week beginning 1 July 2017

Internship Description

 

During the assignment the intern will gain knowledge and experience of sustainable finance and banking subjects as well as analytic skills relative to bank financial and non-financial metrics. There are three key types of tasks:

  • Research; e.g. desk research on financial institutions in general and sustainable banking in specific, financial analysis on a variety of types of banks to support overall research publication on the business case for sustainable banking, research on multiple aspects of non-financial financial sector metrics and initiatives in this area, research on and development of detailed assessments of potential members for the GABV
  • Project management support; e.g. providing support in the management of a complex project relative to the development and use of a Scorecard to assess banking sustainability, assisting in meeting and webinar organisation as well as communication for multiple stakeholders in the project
  • Organizational tasks; e.g. providing administrative support for updating the GABV website member information and other administrative tasks

 

Profile

 

  • Relevant Bachelor or Master students (Master level strongly preferred)
  • A strong command of written and spoken English is necessary as all research and communication tasks are conducted in English. Spanish capability is highly valued.
  • Interest in banking and financial services as well as sustainability and social development
  • Exposure to financial analysis using publicly available information, preferably with experience in reviewing financial statements for banking institutions
  • Exposure to non-financial metrics for assessing performance, preferably in the financial services sector
  • The internship is relevant if you are interested in sustainable finance, financial and non-financial analysis and economics. In order to make this internship a success it is important that the intern likes to perform research and do organizational work
  • Strong analytical skills including excellent Excel skills are required as you will be asked to compile data from public financial reports of financial institutions and submissions from banks. Analytical skills to analyse data, compile graphs and diagrams, interpret results and identify potential analysis and spreadsheet errors are very helpful
  • Basic understanding of annual reports, balance sheets, income statements and knowledge of financial ratios especially as they relate to banking and finance
  • Able to work independently although you will work closely within a small secretariat

Impact Lender, Community Investment

Vancity Community Investment Bank, a federally chartered bank that is wholly-owned by Vancity a BC-based financial cooperative, is launching as a new 100% community and environmental impact-focused bank. We are committed to changing what progressive Canadians expect from a bank. This new focus will begin with the creation of a lending and capital advisory team in Toronto. The goal will be to build strong relationships with key sector leading entities and provide them with advice and capital to support the community and environmental work they are doing. This could be direct, secured project financing; business lending; acquisition of impact loan portfolios; restructuring of project and business loan portfolios; and new deal capital structuring and financing. The bank plans to develop a dynamic internal capital deployment strategy including syndicating with sector stakeholders and collaboratively building new investment products that provide for efficient community access to capital and clients with the ability to make deposits and investments that support a clean environment and stronger community. This work will include identifying ways for government to accelerate the increased flow of capital to the sector.

To help start this work in Toronto, VCIB needs two Lenders to take the lead on creating a portfolio of community investment loans, identifying and supporting values-aligned borrowers, and achieving portfolio lending and renewal targets. Work will include a broad list of duties connected to origination, underwriting and funding of GTA lending and investment banking opportunities. The Lender will be a critical member of a small team working collectively to identify and create opportunities that optimize community impact and achieving financial returns.

More specifically, work will include:

  1. Business Development, Portfolio and Relationship Management
    1. Market development, identifying and building relationships with key actors requiring capital in the community and environmental sectors in the GTA
    2. Build strong relationships with key sector leading entities and provide them with advice and capital enabling community impact opportunities
    3. Work collaboratively with partner and sector organizations to support the growth the impact finance market
    4. Assist in community investment market development: identifying lending and investment banking opportunities, working to create partnerships to overcome market gaps
    5. Help refine and ensure the application of appropriate credit and documentation policies and practices
    6. Ensure the origination, underwriting, and management of lending and other capital strategies to meet the needs of the developing impact sector in the GTA
    7. Identify lending and capital deployment opportunities by sourcing, developing and maintaining relationships to achieve budgeted growth, volumes, referrals and profitability targets
    8. Assess needs and advise institutional customers and organizations on appropriate asset allocation that meet their investment objectives
    9. Oversee compliance review of borrowers with financial and reporting covenants; escalate as needed
    10. Prepare internal loan portfolio reports
  2. Education and Experience
    1. Bachelor’s degree required, additional degrees with business or community development focus welcomed
    2. 5+ years of business lending experience, including financial and operational due diligence of small businesses, nonprofits, and familiarity with project financing;
    3. Formal credit training / auditing / corporate finance experience
    4. Commercial transaction lending experience is preferred, including commercial loan structuring experience
    5. Candidates who are familiar/have experience working in/with: community investment, social finance sector, social enterprises, for-profit and non-profit investors/borrowers
  3. Additional Requirements
    1. Must be committed to mission of VCIB and building a sustainable banking alternative that delivers capital to community investment

Responsibilities in this position will be:

  • Manage and expand an investment portfolio in the region, consisting of debt and, depending on your seniority, equity investments
  • Initiate, maintain and deepen contacts with existing and new clients, being financial institutions active in micro- and SME finance and also in other financial services which contribute to sustainable development. In particular in the areas of sustainable food & agriculture and renewable energy
  • Commercially responsible for the full deal process, including negotiating conditions and contracting
