‘From Intention to Action’, the second meeting of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, was hosted by BRAC Bank in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 6 – 8 March 2010.
The event was launched by BRAC Bank Group Chairman, Fazle Hasan Abed, and the Bangladeshi Finance Minister, the Honourable Abul Maal Abdul Muhith. Mohamed Rumee Ali, Chairman of BRAC Bank, welcomed the audience of banking dignitaries and the media with a speech encouraging the banking industry to take more responsibility for its actions.
Speaking at the launch, Fazl Hasan Abed – co-founder of the GABV and founder and Chair of BRAC, says:
“The banking industry can be a key pillar in fighting climate change and building better livelihoods for millions of people across the developing world. In many ways Bangladesh is in the front-line. That is why we are delighted to host the banking industry’s sustainability pioneers, because they have developed new banking models that can answer some of our biggest problems.”
The meeting closed with the announcement of an ambitious goal to use sustainable banking to touch the lives of a billion people by 2020, and agreement on five action tracks to do it.
The conference reader attached details the programme and its participants, as well as background on the GABV Charter, and speeches from HRH Princess Maxima and Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, who helped to launch the network at a special event in the Netherlands in 2009.
